About the Book

Sown in Light is a captivating collection of poems, stories and experiences told from the point of view of a young, black girl who grew up in a conservative Christian home. Each poem in this book is a snapshot of a significant moment that paved the way for Tekira’s spiritual journey. The struggle is not new but true to the experience of those who grew up in religious households. To truly express this work, the book is divided into 3 parts: Planting Seeds, Pulling Weeds, and Producing Petals. These sections describe the nurturing in her youth, the struggle in her heart, and the blooming of her faith. It is heartwarming in its authenticity and captivating in its transparency. It is a book for this generation and all the ones to come.

A confessional of a different kind. Through poetry, Tekira lays bare her upbringing in the black church, her struggles with God, and the reconciliation of her faith. Filled with snapshots of her young life and burning questions of faith, she invites the reader into her most private moments with Jesus. This poetry collection is overflowing with the sincerity and loves you only get when you choose Jesus for yourself.

Sown in Light REview:

Briscoe provides such an honest, raw and beautiful offering of her heart through her poetic words and vivacious storytelling. As she wrestles, explores, questions and dives deeply into her faith, she gives us as readers the permission to do the same. To not be afraid of getting our hands messy, provides a permission slip to wander into the unknown and find that this journey is also a journey of faith, a worthy one where we find God in the middle of it all and closely with us.
